  1. I've seen three woodpeckers---Pileated, Downy, and Red-Bellied---over the last year, but I've never seen this one.

  3. I think they're called that because their stringy feathers remind some people of hair. There's a closely-related species in the same genus called a downy woodpecker - same deal, small whispy feathers.
