I've seen three woodpeckers---Pileated, Downy, and Red-Bellied---over the last year, but I've never seen this one.
He don't look hairy he looks like the ones we get flying around here.
I think they're called that because their stringy feathers remind some people of hair. There's a closely-related species in the same genus called a downy woodpecker - same deal, small whispy feathers.
