(Belgians waiting to compete in the driving event at the Northwest Washington Fair. There are other breeds here as well, but for reasons I don't understand, Belgians seem to be the regional standard.)

I think the Belgium draft horses are considered the gentlest of the draft horses, with a massive body and personality to go with it. They are also quite a beautiful horse. Nice photograph.
ReplyDeleteAh ha. Thanks for that. I do know that they had the general reputation around here as more versatile than other draught horses -- smaller than huge, so better suited to logging and small farms than the big 18-wheeled breeds. Given the diverse work we wanted them to do, your theory holds water.
ReplyDeleteOne year at the Puyallup fair there was a horse barn with Belgians in one section, Clydesdales in another, and in the same barn were the stalls for the Shetlands. They put the ponies in with the big ones.
ReplyDeleteI hope the Shelties weren't stalled with the heavy horses; like to get stepped on.
ReplyDeleteSeparate stalls for them.
