(Friends lent me this tiny cabin high on a forested ridge to use as a radio shack for two weeks. One of the nicest and most radio-friendly sites I've operated. And an excellent hermit hut.)

Everyone should have a hermit hut, she-shed or some sort of unique space to pursue a guilty pleasure like radio, photography, etc. Outstanding friend you have.
ReplyDeletemaybe I don't understand - why do you need someone elses' radio shack? You can't do the radio work at home?
ReplyDeleteThe short answer is that operating portable is part of the hobby, one that many of us (myself included) enjoy. Establishing a station at a new site and making successful contacts from it is one joy of the pastime. The skills so acquired also have practical value in emergency operations.
DeleteThe longer answer is that other sites often offer better operating conditions than you have at home. In this case, the cabin in question is on top of a mountain, something few can boast of their houses. (That said, I did once live on top of a mountain, for two years. The radio up there was brilliant.) And some people can't in fact operate from home, a situation that crops up more and more since recent changes in consumer technology can make it impossible to receive any signals where we live. Hams like that have no choice but to leave home to pursue their hobby.
I can and do operate from home, but conditions where I live are weak and the results often uninspiring. But I especially enjoy the challenge of setting up in other places -- even outdoors -- and establishing contact.
Yes, I'd be very very happy there alone with my dog and cat. It's perfect.
